Which Data Should You Be Monitoring?

Cloud monitoring, we all need it and know its importance for insight on performance and availability but do we really know how to understand and fully benefit from the extracted data?

Only a few machines and applications need to be monitored before fixing issues on your environment can become pretty complicated. Then throw in the dynamic infrastructure provided by hosts, and existing static monitoring strategies will likely not scale. Knowing which metrics to watch and how to troubleshoot based on those metrics will help solve problems quicker.

Here are some pointers from the monitoring experts:

  • Choose a monitoring tool that supports elastic environments like AWS
  • Make sure your monitoring tool integrates with AWS cloudwatch metrics
  • Sync major system events like version upgrades with monitoring data
  • Integrate your monitoring system with your incident management platform
